The function is usually available for vehicles with the following equipment:

• Teleservices (SA 6AE)
• For vehicles with production date from summer 2020: Comfort access (SA 322)
• For vehicles with production date from the end of 2021: Comfort Access (SA 322) or BMW Digital Key (SA 3DK)
• BMW Digital Key Plus is only available for vehicles with a production date from the end of 2021 and with Comfort Access (SA 322).

In some countries and/or regions, the radio technology for BMW Digital Key Plus (UWB) is not permitted. Due to legal requirements, functionality may be restricted there. In these cases, NFC guarantees access to the vehicle. To do this, hold the smartphone against the outside door handle.

Your digital key is securely stored on the Secure Element of your smartphone. In addition, both NFC and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology are used to establish the immediate proximity of the sender and receiver in a tamper-proof manner.

Initially, Digital Key Plus was exclusively available for Apple devices. However, starting from 2023, BMW extended the compatibility of Digital Key Plus to include Samsung and Google devices running Android 13.1 or later. You can find more information about Digital Key on Samsung devices here.

Please note that the availability of the Digital Key function depends on having the necessary prerequisites and the latest vehicle software in place.

You can use your smartphone to unlock and start your vehicle even if the device needs to be charged. If your smartphone's battery is very low, it switches to power-saving mode. With the right setting, you can still use it as a key for several hours afterwards.

Before you sell your vehicle, you should delete it completely from your BMW ID. This will ensure that all digitally created keys are automatically removed the next time you use a classic vehicle key.

If the function is activated when sharing a key, the following functions are restricted in their entirety: Acceleration is basically reduced and the top speed is limited to approx. 145 km/h. In addition, vehicle safety systems such as DSC and DTC cannot be deactivated by the driver. In addition, the maximum volume is reduced to approx. 65 %.

The Key Card is an NFC card that acts as a vehicle key independently of your digital key on your smartphone. It comes deactivated with your vehicle from the factory and can be activated or deactivated as required. It is particularly useful in the event of a service or for the parking service. The key card is activated by a classic vehicle key or an active digital key via the smartphone tray. An active key card should never be left in the vehicle.
